Seccional Florida Sur del PRM, siempre recuerda a su líder eterno José Francisco Peña Gómez, a 25 años de su partida.

La Seccional Florida Sur del PRM, empeñada en que las nuevas generaciones conozcan la vida y trayectoria política de su líder eterno  el doctor José Francisco Peña Gómez, al cumplirse 25 años de su partida física,  ha decidido publicar un fragmento de su amplia biografía:

José Francisco Peña Gómez nació el 6 de marzo de 1937, en la loma de El Flaco, Cruce de Guayacanes, Mao. Peña Gómez se quedó en los montes de Gurabo, Mao, junto con su único hermano, Domingo, y una pariente menor de edad. Encontrados por una familia de Gurabo, Peña Gómez salvó la vida casi milagrosamente. Fue posteriormente adoptado por otra familia en Mao. Con claro esfuerzo y tesón superó numerosas vicisitudes hasta llegar a la universidad. José Francisco Peña Gómez se graduó de abogado en la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, con estudios de ciencias políticas en la Universidad de Harvard y la Michigan State University, y de Derecho Constitucional y Derecho del Trabajo y Seguridad Social en la Universidad de París.

 

Ingresó en el Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), el 5 de julio de 1961, para luchar contra los remanentes de la tiranía trujillista. Fue un firme dirigente político al estallar la revolución civil de 1965, llamando al pueblo a movilizarse en defensa de la constitucionalidad perdida en 1963. Fue presidente del Partido Revolucionario Dominicano desde 1986, vicepresidente de la Conferencia Permanente de Partidos Políticos de América Latina (COPPAL), vicepresidente de la Internacional Socialista (IS) y vicepresidente de la Asociación Latinoamericana para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos, miembro del consejo directivo del Instituto Latinoamericano de Estudios Políticos, Económicos y Sociales, miembro del Diálogo Interamericano.

En 1996 todo parecía indicar que el Dr. Peña Gómez sería el nuevo presidente, llegando a ganar la primera vuelta de las elecciones con un 46%. Pero para la segunda vuelta se unieron el Presidente Joaquín Balaguer y el ex-presidente Juan Bosch en el llamado «Frente Patriótico» para apoyar a Leonel Fernández. Peña Gómez no pudo ver cumplir su sueño de ser presidente de la República, a pesar de ser el político que mayor votación ha obtenido en la historia electoral dominicana, ya que nunca obtuvo el 50% de los votos.


Contrajo matrimonio con Julia Idalia Guaba Martínez, tuvieron cuatro hijos, Lourdes Fátima, Luz del Alba, José Francisco y Francisco Antonio. Casó con Ana Rosa Meléndez con la que fue padre de María Rosa. Casado por tercera vez con Alba María «Peggy» Cabral Cornero, el matrimonio no tuvo hijos. Peña tuvo nueve hijos en total.

Falleció en Cambita Garabito el domingo 10 de mayo de 1998, seis días antes de las elecciones congresuales y municipales, ganadas por el Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD).

José Francisco Peña Gómez, dijo: «Solo a los pueblos les corresponde la tarea de elegir su sistema de vida y de gobierno».
